**Day 1: Sofia**
Arrive at Sofia Airport and transfer to your hotel. Absorb views of the nearby Vitosha Mountain and the bustling energy of Bulgaria’s capital, a city where centuries of history meet contemporary life. An evening at leisure allows for a gentle introduction to Sofia’s atmosphere and charm.
**Day 2: Sofia**
Explore Sofia’s rich heritage with visits to the majestic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, and the 16th-century Banya Bashi Mosque, an Ottoman masterpiece by Mimar Sinan. Witness the ceremonial Changing of the Guard at the Presidency Building before discovering the Serdica Roman ruins.
Continue to the 6th-century Saint Sophia Church and the History Museum housed in the former mineral baths. The day concludes with leisure along Vitosha Boulevard, offering a balance of historic insight and contemporary city life.
**Day 3: Sofia > Plovdiv**
Travel to Plovdiv, one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Explore the Ancient Stadium of Philippopolis, capable of seating 30,000 spectators, and the remarkably preserved Roman Theatre, still used for performances today. Visit the Ethnographic Museum, set in a 19th-century merchant’s house, before discovering the vibrant Kapana Creative District.
Stroll through the cobbled streets of Plovdiv’s Old Town, admire Revival-period architecture, and finish with panoramic views from Nebet Tepe hill.
**Day 4: Plovdiv > Asenovgrad > Bachkovo > Shiroka Laka **
Journey south to the dramatic Asen’s Fortress, a medieval stronghold perched on a rocky ridge with commanding views of the surrounding landscape. Continue to Bachkovo Monastery, founded in 1083 and renowned for its richly decorated frescoes and fusion of Byzantine, Georgian, and Bulgarian traditions.
Travel into the Rhodope Mountains to Shiroka Laka, an architectural reserve celebrated for its authentic Rhodope-style houses and vibrant folklore traditions, offering a glimpse into rural Bulgarian culture.
**Day 5: Rhodope Mountains**
Venture deeper into the Rhodope Mountains, exploring the impressive Trigrad Gorge, where sheer cliffs rise more than 350 metres above the river. Visit the nearby village of Trigrad, known for its hospitality and traditional lifestyle.
Continue to Yagodina Cave, one of Bulgaria’s most remarkable cave systems, featuring striking rock formations and expansive underground halls. A day of natural wonders and traditional mountain culture. Overnight again in Shiroka Laka.
**Day 6: Shiroka Laka > Veliko Tarnovo**
Drive northeast through scenic landscapes to Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria’s medieval capital and former seat of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Take time at leisure to absorb the city’s historical ambiance, set against the dramatic Yantra River valley. The evening offers an opportunity to stroll through charming streets and enjoy views of the surrounding hills.
**Day 7: Veliko Tarnovo & Arbanasi**
Explore the nearby village of Arbanasi, once a wealthy merchant settlement, with stone mansions and richly decorated churches. Return to Veliko Tarnovo to visit the Asenevtsi Monument, overlooking the Yantra River, the Church of Saints Forty Martyrs, and the Patriarchal Cathedral on Tsarevets Hill.
Wander Samovodska Charshia, the historic crafts street, then visit the imposing Tsarevets Fortress, the former royal residence of Bulgarian tsars. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo.
**Day 8: Veliko Tarnovo > Nessebar**
Depart Veliko Tarnovo and travel east toward the Black Sea coast. Arrive in Nessebar, a UNESCO-listed town set on a picturesque peninsula. Its cobbled streets and historic buildings reveal centuries of Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Bulgarian influence.
An evening at leisure allows you to explore the town’s charming coastal ambiance and enjoy the views of the Black Sea.
**Day 9: Nessebar**
Spend the day discovering Nessebar’s historic Old Town, often called the “Pearl of the Black Sea.” Visit the ornate Church of Christ Pantocrator, the mural-adorned Church of St. Stephen, and the Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Explore the Archaeological Museum to see treasures spanning more than 3,000 years. Meandering streets and seaside vistas provide a sensory experience of Bulgaria’s layered history, where maritime culture and architecture meet the enduring beauty of the Black Sea coast.
**Day 10: Nessebar > Varna**
Drive to Varna Airport for your onward flight.
